One solution for this is to eat jaggery with hot water. But does it really work? To understand whether this is true or not, HT Lifestyle spoke to Dr Piyush Goyal, Senior Consultant-Pulmonology at Narayana Hospital, Gurugram. He revealed that many people are under the impression that this remedy helps ‘clean the lungs and prevent infection’.
Is it beneficial?
Explaining the nutritional value of jaggery, Dr. Goyal elaborates, “Jaggery is rich in vital elements like iron, selenium, magnesium and vitamin B1. These minerals and vitamins are extremely important for boosting your immunity, which helps your lungs.”
In other words, jaggery helps boost your immunity, which strengthens your body to fight infections better, thereby reducing the chances of germs affecting your lungs.
But when it comes to the blanket claim that jaggery cleans your lungs, pulmonologists clarified that it literally doesn’t. Instead, it improves immunity, which helps keep your lungs and overall respiratory health in good condition.
how to make it

Pulmonologist shares how to make it at home and when to drink it. “Take 1-2 teaspoons of jaggery and mix it in a glass of warm water. Drink it on an empty stomach in the morning to get the most out of it.”
avoid complete dependence
Although home remedies offer some natural benefits, they cannot take the place of proper medical care. Dr. Goyal stressed that although it has some benefits in lung health, one should not consider it a magic pill, especially for lung infections or severe breathing problems.
So the pulmonologist’s final verdict on this remedy is that although it offers some benefits, it should not be considered a cure. “It’s not like this drink will literally ‘clean’ your lungs, but the nutrients in the hot water and jaggery may help your body fight infection better, keeping your respiratory system healthier over time,” he said.
This means the drink is helpful in nature for lung health, and pulmonologists said it only works best with a healthy lifestyle, when you eat well, drink enough water and don’t smoke. All these habits together help in keeping your lungs healthy. Relying on just one habit is not enough here.
