Priyanka Chopra, who made her acting debut in 2002 opposite Vijay in the Tamil film ‘Thamizhan’, was initially hesitant to say yes to the film. In a recent interview with Filmygyan, Priyanka’s mother Madhu Chopra recalled how she encouraged her ‘obedient daughter’ to say yes to the role. ‘Priyanka has always been an obedient child’
Madhu said that Priyanka did not want to work in films. He said, “Priyanka did not want to work in films. She got an offer for a South Indian film through someone. When I told Priyanka about the offer, she started crying and said, ‘I will not do films.’ But she has always been an obedient child. When I asked her to accept the offer, she agreed and signed the contract (for Thamizhan).”
‘Priyanka was initially not able to keep pace with Vijay’
“While she was shooting for the film, she started liking it. Despite not knowing the language, she enjoyed it. The team helped her and treated her with a lot of respect. Vijay acted in the film; he is a gentleman. Raju Sundaram was the choreographer. Priyanka was okay at dancing, but she couldn’t match steps with Vijay initially. She would practise with the choreographer from morning to evening. Then she started enjoying it. It also helped her craft her character and she realised that she wanted to pursue it as a career,” Madhu said.
Upcoming work
After Priyanka was crowned Miss World 2000, she joined films and made her acting debut in Thamizhan (2002), followed by her first Bollywood film The Hero: Love Story of a Spy (2003), co-starring Sunny Deol.
Priyanka’s upcoming films include The Bluff, directed by Frank E Flowers. She recently finished shooting for Heads of State, an upcoming action-comedy starring Idris Elba, John Cena and Jack Quaid in lead roles.
