Scientists have for the first time discovered a complete skull of the bird species Genyornis newtoni. According to a BBC report, the perfectly preserved skull found in Australia belongs to a giant flightless bird that weighed around 230 kilograms, which is about four times the weight of an average human.

Until now scientists were able to guess the appearance of this giant extinct bird based on a destroyed skull found decades ago. However, the recently discovered skull, which is about 45,000 to 50,000 years old, will help them identify the true appearance of the giant bird.

When did this giant bird become extinct?
The giant bird species, also known as the mihirung, became extinct about 45,000 years ago. Humans discovered the species when they found the bird’s skull for the first time in 1913. However, the remains of the giant bird were incomplete and badly damaged. As a result, questions about the bird’s exact appearance, its habits and ancestry remained unanswered. The discovery of the first complete skull of the giant swan will enable scientists to have a face-to-face encounter with the giant mihirung for the first time. The skull has a very peculiar swan face.

About the Giant Bird Skull
The 32 cm (1 ft) skull was discovered at the dry bottom of Lake Callabonnum, located in the remote inland region of South Australia. The site was once home to thousands of animals that later became trapped in the mud. The second known skull of this species was found in 1913.
However, it was completely damaged and only a small amount of original bone was left. But this time, the bird’s skull has clear features, including a massive cranium, large upper and lower jaws, and an unusual covering, like a helmet. Scientists have also noticed a wide mouth, which is expected to give the bird the strength to bite and crush soft plants and fruits on the roof of its mouth.
