Are we headed for a massive collapse?
Lady Gaga will walk the red carpet at the currently ongoing 81st Venice Film Festival for the upcoming huge release Joker: Folie a DeuxLady Gaga arrived by gondola at the Hotel Cipriani dock with her fiancé Michael Polansky. If her bright blonde hair wasn’t already a surprise in itself, the luxurious yet non-conformist look for the evening added polka dots to the repertoire of autumn fashion trends.
The large stone on her finger – another confirmation of her engagement to Michael – is, of course, timeless.

However, this dress exudes retro vibes. Sleek, silky and short, Lady Gaga’s monochrome mini featured a ruched, statement bow at the midriff, which was balanced out with sheer tights, solid black pumps and dark sunglasses. The dress was as simple as it was stylish. It’s a statement that signals a change in trend as the weather officially moves towards fall.
Autumn fashion stereotypically focuses on a ‘dull’ spectrum of colours and places more emphasis on textures and knits as opposed to prints, although the latter is not uncommon. On the other hand, put very simply, retro is beautifully loud. Immediately, we are faced with an aesthetic conflict. But is that so bad?
Although floral designs for spring are nothing revolutionary (the devil Wears Prada Fans please say yes), polka dots are definitely in for autumn, as well as glitter and volume. Gaga’s foray into polka is another nascent confirmation of trend forecasts moving in the right direction.
If you were planning to put away your glitter, shine and sparkle with the temperatures dropping soon, you should revise your plans. From sequined minis to bejewelled baggies and even shiny tinsel, if runway trends are to be believed, they can all find a place in your fall wardrobe. Don’t believe us? Bottega Veneta, Comme des Garcons, Rabbane, Tory Burch, Dries Van Noten and even Zara have joined the bandwagon.

If you don’t like shine, you can reduce reflections and increase texture, placing more emphasis on volume. Some easy ways to adopt this trend are by layering ostrich feathers or other forms of wool, strong, warm touch. Look to Isabel Marant, Michael Kors and Dorothy Schumacher for inspiration.

Specifically going back to retro, wide, oversized statement shoulders are also back. Not only is it an 80s aesthetic, but it also lends itself to the growing androgynous wave that has effortlessly established itself through all the annual fashion cycles.
Will you be having a loud and proud autumn?
