Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to freedom fighter Veer Savarkar on his death anniversary and lauded his contribution as a source of inspiration in furthering the progress and prosperity of our nation.
“Tributes to Veer Savarkar on his death anniversary,” the Prime Minister said in a post on Twitter. India will always remember his bravery and unwavering dedication to the freedom and integrity of our country. His contribution inspires us to strive for the development and prosperity of our country.”
Born on May 28, 1883 in Nashik, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, commonly known as Veer Savarkar, was a versatile personality, known as a freedom fighter, politician, lawyer and writer.
He gained fame for introducing the term ‘Hindutva’ and played a major role in ‘Hindu Mahasabha’. Engaged in the struggle for independence since his high school years, Savarkar’s activism continued during his time at Fergusson College, Pune.

During his legal studies in the United Kingdom, he became involved with organizations such as India House and the Free India Society. Additionally, he also wrote books advocating revolutionary strategies to achieve complete Indian sovereignty.
One of his publications, ‘The Indian War of Independence’, which detailed the events of the ‘Sepoy Mutiny’ of 1857 or the First War of Independence, was banned by the British colonial authorities.
