Royal dinner organized for PM Modi in Oman
PM Modi’s visit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa on a historic visit on 16 December. This was the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister in the last 15 years. This visit was considered a historic turning point for India-Africa relations as Ethiopia is considered the center of diplomacy. Now he has reached Oman on the last day of this tour. The highlight of this visit will be free trade agreements, investment in trade in sectors like textiles, automobile and logistics and defense cooperation. Oman can also discuss giving spare parts of its Air Force’s ‘Jaguar’ fighter jets to India.
In the high-level talks between Prime Minister Modi and Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali, both the countries formally gave the status of strategic partnership to their relationship. Prime Minister Modi received a very warm and personal welcome and farewell in Ethiopia. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali himself came to pick him up at the airport and drove himself to the hotel to drop him. When he started returning, the Ethiopian PM once again took the driving seat and came to drop him to the plane.
Important visit for India-Ethiopia relations
The cooperation between the two countries will not be limited only to development projects but will also deepen in important areas like security, technology, trade and economic strength. The timing of this partnership is considered very important. Ethiopia is not only the headquarters of the African Union, but has now also become a member of the BRICS group. Through this visit, India has strengthened itself as a reliable partner of the Global South and first aid in times of crisis. India’s policy here has not been that of any helping country but of partnership based on equality and shared values. Strong relations with Ethiopia also give India a strategic edge in the Horn of Africa region, which is very important in terms of Red Sea and maritime trade.
