They have been spraying on the biranis for a long time, have been stuck in Mitai, and have enjoyed during festive feasts-but Pistta is finally being recognized for more than their garnish -able appeal. As India growing in the number of diabetes and predeabitrities – with 101 million and 136 million adults respectively – this humble walnut is being quietly obtained as a nutrition powerhouse.
Earlier this year, the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) published a study at the Journal of Nutrition, outlining the potential of pistachios in the prevention of diabetes. MDRF President Dr. V. Under Mohan’s leadership, 120 persons were included in the 12-week clinical test, which found that consuming 30 grams of roasted pistachios before breakfast and dinner improved the average status due to better blood sugar control to weight, triglyceride levels and a decrease in the waist perimeter. “This is a simple, effective intervention,” says Dr. Mohan.
With nutrition, pistachios tick on several boxes. Nutritionist Dr. Anjana Kalia says, “They are rich in protein for muscle health, packed with dietary fiber to aid digestion and regulate blood sugar, and are filled with heart -friendly fat,”
Their benefits move forward: folate for expectant mother, magnesium for aging bones, and heart healthy fats for all. “Pistachies are especially good due to their folate content for pregnant women, and their bone-firm properties for adults,” Dr. Drishya Elle says, who is a dietary in Para Health, Gurugram.
It is not surprising that pistachios are getting more than just festive fare. Sumit Saran, a representative of India of American pistachirs, said, “A post-pandemic change has been made in India’s snacks,”
Although India does not grow commercially pistachio, California-developed varieties are widely available. “You will find them in shops across the country,” Saran says and says, “All consumers are looking for California pistachio and choose their favorite brand.”
Pistachio, it seems, no longer a cure. They are worth developing a habit.
