In an important step to challenge the dominance in Google’s search market, Perplexity AI has now launched the AI-operated COMET web browser for all its pro subscribers in India. According to the announcement made on social media by CEO Arvind Srinivas, this is the biggest expansion of the company in the country, which aims to take advantage of India’s vast and digitally intelligent user base.
Comet was first introduced to the Max subscribers of Perplexity in July and has now been made available to Pro Subscribers. The COMET browser is currently available on Windows and Macos devices and the company has started pre-booking on Google Play Store for Android users. There is no update for the iOS version right now.
However, note that COMET is only available for Perplexity Pro subscribers, so those who have free accounts will not be able to download it. The annual membership of Pro Tier is priced at Rs 17,000. However, Airtel subscribers get Pro Tier Service for one year for free.
Comet distinguishes itself from competitors like Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, as it has an AI-operated sidebar always on with a standard web interface. This unique feature, which is called Perplexity ‘Agentic’, allows users to do complex, multi-step task which are far ahead of simple browsing. The browser can automate many tasks, such as comparing product prices, summarizing documents, schedule of meeting, email drafts and sending, and even completing online transactions.
A major attraction of COMET is its workspace interface, which eliminates the need to manage many tabs and consolidates all related information in the same, integrated view. AI within COMET learns from the browsing history, working habits and search queries of the user to provide referred and highly relevant information, which effectively serves as an individual research agent.
