In contrast, gasoline hybrid vehicle sales increased to 99,832 units in the first quarter from 68,249 units a year earlier. However, sales of gasoline-powered vehicles fell 19 percent to 1,96,472 units in the March quarter from 2,41,742 units a year ago.
Sales of diesel cars also decreased
At the same time, there has also been a decline in the demand for diesel cars. There has been a decline of 56 percent in diesel car sales. Industry experts have predicted that due to high prices, electric vehicle sales may remain sluggish throughout the year.
Why was there disillusionment with electric cars?
People are scared due to recent cases of fire in electric cars. According to a report, during the years 2020 and 2021, many cases of fire in electric cars parked or charging were reported in South Korea. A few months ago, Hyundai Motor had recalled over 77,000 Kona EVs sold globally after 13 electric crossover vehicles caught fire. Hyundai and its battery supplier LG Chem were at odds over the reasons for the recall. However, the battery cell manufacturer had clearly denied any tampering with the batteries.
Apart from this, lack of charging stations to charge electric cars is also becoming a big problem. The high price of electric cars and rising interest rates on vehicle loans are also hindering the sale of electric cars. At the same time, people have also been protesting about the quality of electric cars made in China.
A few months ago, the subsidy on electric cars was reduced in South Korea, the biggest impact of which was seen on the sales of Tesla’s electric cars. Tesla, the company that sells the most electric cars worldwide, was able to sell only 1 car in South Korea in January 2024.
