Pay close attention to the Good Samaritan law, be kind whenever possible – Dalai Lama

New Delhi. When people help the needy without any selfishness, this feeling is called philanthropy. A good person is one who helps others in any emergency situation, irrespective of his personal interests. We all must have seen such people at some point in our lives, who helped people without any benefit. The statistics of road accidents in India are shocking, in the year 2022 there were 4.61 lakh road accidents in which 1.68 lakh people lost their lives. According to the Law Commission of India, if first aid was given on time, the lives of 50 percent of these people could have been saved.

The first hour after an accident is very crucial, in which there is very little difference between life and death. If first aid is given during this period called golden hour, the serious condition of the person injured in the accident can be reduced as well as his chances of survival can be increased. But 75 percent of people were hesitant in helping those injured in road accidents, because they were afraid of hassles like police and legal action, and staying in the hospital for several hours. Due to such problems, most people remained hesitant in helping the injured and people injured in road accidents did not get timely help.

Good Samaritan law came in 2016
In response to these challenges, SaveLife Foundation filed a petition in the Honorable Supreme Court in 2012, due to which the Good Samaritan Law came into existence in 2016. This law was implemented in the entire country. Also, in the year 2019, a new section 134A was added to the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, which will protect the Good Samaritan from any kind of action while providing emergency medical and other assistance i.e. they will not be harassed in any way. Can be done.

This law keeps the helpers away from legal actions and other paperwork and motivates them to help the injured in road accidents. So that the helpers do not have to worry about any legal hassles or any other problem and the injured can get timely help.

Encouragement to those helping the injured
Under this law, the interests of citizens who help the injured are taken special care. This law has been brought in to provide a safe environment to those who wish to help. However, there is still a need to increase awareness among people regarding this law. Making people aware of this law means that in this way they can be directly motivated to help the people injured in road accidents without getting entangled in legal troubles and police action.

If this reduces the current death toll by 50 percent, that is, 84 thousand lives are saved every year, then it will be a huge success. Besides, this will also provide inspiration to extend the Good Samaritan Law to more and more people. This will motivate people who want to help to come forward and help.

During the second edition of Road Safety Campaign 2024, efforts are being made to create awareness among the people about the Good Samaritan Law, so that any fear of legal action or otherwise can be removed from the minds of the people. If more and more people become aware of this law, then the chances of saving the lives of people injured in accidents on the roads will also increase.

This law, which has the potential to reduce deaths in road accidents and save more lives, can definitely play an important role in making our roads safer.
