In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Bipinchandra Bhamare, consultant cardiac surgeon at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre in Mumbai, explained, “Heart disease comprises of conditions that affect the structure and function of the heart. One of the common types is coronary artery disease (CAD) which is seen when plaque builds up in the arteries, restricting blood flow to the heart. If left untreated, it can lead to chest pain, heart attack, and eventually death.”
He added, “Cardiomyopathy occurs when the heart muscle enlarges or weakens and fails to pump blood as required. Arrhythmia means irregular heartbeats that disrupt the heart’s pumping rhythm and invite complications like fainting or cardiac arrest. Timely reporting of symptoms to the doctor can help get immediate medical attention. However, not treating heart disease at the right time can lead to a variety of heart diseases that can cause life-threatening complications.”
The heart specialist explained and explained the fatal complications of heart disease in detail –
1. Heart attack or sudden cardiac arrest:
It is a known fact that untreated heart disease leads to a number of worrying complications. Did you know? If not treated at the right time, CAD can put you at risk of a nasty heart attack or even sudden cardiac arrest. You must get treatment before it is too late.
2. Heart failure:
Cardiomyopathy can lead to complications such as heart failure if not treated promptly. Moreover, arrhythmia is another complication of untreated heart disease and can lead to abnormal heart rhythm, stroke or sudden cardiac death. The need of the hour is to intervene promptly without any delay as soon as the symptoms are noticed.
3. Heart attack:
Arrhythmias increase the risk of heart attack and death. Symptoms of a heart attack include dizziness, shortness of breath, fatigue, rapid heartbeat, and nausea.
4. Emotional and physical effects:
If someone has heart disease and it is not treated, he or she may become depressed, anxious and stressed as his or her health deteriorates over time.
Dr. Bipinchandra Bhamare concludes, “By getting regular health checkups, eating a nutritious diet, exercising, controlling stress levels, and following the treatment plan prescribed by the doctor, it is possible to prevent complications and improve the quality of life. So, get regular heart checkups done to detect any abnormalities related to heart health that can make a difference.”
