The Government of India announced the Padma Awards on Thursday. People associated with arts, education, industry, literature, science, acting, medicine, social service and public affairs received India’s second highest civilian honor after Bharat Ratna. The awards were announced as usual on the eve of Republic Day. Vyjayanthimala, Chiranjeevi, Mithun Chakraborty, singer Usha Uthup and composer Pyarelal Sharma are among the 132 people to receive the prestigious award this year. Chiranjeevi and Vyjayantimala awarded Padma Vibhushan
Vyjayanthimala (90) and Chiranjeevi (68) have been awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian honour.
Chiranjeevi has acted in more than 160 films in his decades-long career. In 2006 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, becoming his second Padma award. The actor, who will soon be seen in Vishvambhara directed by Vashishtha of Bimbisaar fame, was almost away from films at one time. To enter politics, he took a break from acting after the 2007 film Shankar Dada Zindabad and founded the Praja Rajyam Party in 2008. However, he returned to his first love, cinema, with Khaidi No. 150 in 2017.
Vyjayanthimala, awarded the Padmashree award, is considered the first female superstar of Indian cinema. He acted in several notable films, including Devdas, Naya Daur, Aasha, Sadhna, Gunga Jamna, Sangam and Jewel Thief. His last film is Gaanwar.
Late Vijayakanth
Apart from him, late Tamil actor and politician Vijayakanth has been awarded the Padma Bhushan posthumously for his service. He died in December 2023. Vijayakanth was known for Vaidehi Kathirunthal, Amman Kovil Kizhakale, Poonthotta Kavalakaran, Chinna Gounder and Honest Raj.
Mithun Chakraborty, Usha Uthup, Pyarelal
Actor, politician Mithun Chakraborty, Usha Uthup and Pyarelal Sharma of music duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal, have also been awarded Padma Bhushan.
Mithun (73) is one of the most popular actors of Indian films. He started his career with Mrigaya, for which he received the National Film Award for Best Actor. His other hit films are Disco Dancer, Agneepath, Ghar Ek Mandir, Jallad and Pyaar Jhukta Nahi.
Pop queen Usha Uthup (76) is known as the pioneer of jazz music in Indian films around the 1970s. Some of his evergreen tracks are Ramba Ho, One Too Cha Cha, Shaan Se, Koi Yahaan Naache Naache and Hari Om Hari among many others.
The list includes five Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan and 110 Padma Shri awards. Of the 132 awardees, 30 are women. The list also includes eight individuals from the foreigners’ category along with nine posthumous award winners.
