According to the city and centre-wise analysis of results released by the NTA on Saturday, over 2,250 candidates have got zero marks while over 9,400 candidates have got negative marks.

Over 11,000 candidates have scored zero or negative marks in this year’s controversy-hit medical entrance exam NEET-UG, according to centre-wise results declared by the National Testing Agency.

The minimum marks obtained by any candidate in this important examination is -180 at one centre in Bihar.

According to the city and centre-wise analysis of results released by the NTA on Saturday, over 2,250 candidates have got zero marks while over 9,400 candidates have got negative marks.

At an examination centre in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, there are many candidates who have scored less than zero marks.

Though there are a number of candidates from some centres who have scored zero marks, no cluster is observed as the number of such candidates from each centre is not very large.

According to officials, getting zero marks in the examination does not mean that the answer sheets were blank or no question was solved.

It is possible that the candidate may have answered some questions correctly and some incorrectly, due to which negative marking was done.

In NEET-UG, four marks are awarded for each correct answer and one mark is deducted for each wrong answer. No marks are awarded or deducted for questions not attempted.

The NTA on Saturday released the city and centre-wise results of the medical entrance exam, which is under scrutiny over alleged irregularities including paper leak.

Analysis of the data showed that though the performance of candidates who allegedly benefited from paper leaks and other irregularities was not good, the number of students performing well was higher in some centres.

Over 2,000 NEET-UG candidates from Sikar centres scored above 650 marks, while over 4,000 scored above 600 marks.

The massive result data of over 23 lakh candidates from 4,750 centres was released not in a cumulative format but in a drop-down menu for each centre. The data was released on the direction of the Supreme Court, which is hearing several petitions over alleged irregularities as lakhs of candidates await a final verdict on the fate of the exam.

The Supreme Court is hearing on May 5 a batch of petitions about alleged irregularities in the exam held at 4,750 centres in 571 cities, including 14 foreign cities.

The apex court had ordered that the identity of the candidates be kept secret while declaring the exam results. It had said that it wanted to find out whether candidates who had taken the exam at allegedly tainted centres had scored more marks than those who had taken the exam elsewhere.

The court will again hear arguments on July 22 in the case seeking cancellation of the prestigious exam, re-conduct of the exam and a court-monitored probe into allegations of irregularities in the prestigious exam.
