New Delhi. ChatGPT maker OpenAI on Thursday said it is launching GPT-4o mini, a cost-efficient small AI model, with the aim of making its technology more affordable and also reducing energy consumption, helping the startup reach more customers.
According to news agency Reuters, Microsoft-backed OpenAI, the market leader in the AI software space, is working to make it cheaper and faster for developers to develop software based on its models, at a time when richer rivals such as Meta and Google are racing to grab a bigger market share.
OpenAI said that at a price of 15 cents per million input tokens and 60 cents per million output tokens, GPT-4o Mini is more than 60% cheaper than GPT-3.5 Turbo. The company said it outperforms current GPT-4 models on chat preferences and scores 82% on Massive Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU).

MMLU is a textual intelligence and reasoning benchmark used to evaluate the capabilities of a language model. A high MMLU score means it can better understand and use language across different domains, enhancing real-world usage.
According to OpenAI, the GPT-4o mini model scores 77.9% on par with Google’s Gemini Flash and 73.8% for Anthropic’s Cloud Haiku. Smaller language models require less computational power to run, making them a more affordable option for companies with limited resources looking to deploy generative AI.
