On International Cat Day, Pratibha Ranta shares how her two adopted cats, Theo and Musha, have become an integral part of her life. The 23-year-old actress, best known for her breakout film Laapataa LadiesReflecting on her experiences with her feline companions, she says that while many people consider cats to be moody, they have a different story to tell.
“It depends on how you raise them,” explains Ranta. “If you give them love, they give you love. If I’m crying, they’ll come and sit next to me; that’s their way of comforting you. I’ve noticed that with my Arabs. Arabs have taken over the market for dogs a little bit because they’re very low maintenance.” She plans to spend more time with them today, as this year has been quite busy for her. “I’ll groom them well,” she adds.

The affection I get from animals… it helps you as a person. We still have a cow at home. The ghee in our house comes straight from the farm. I have always realised the value of animals,” says the actor, “It’s starting to become more valuable in Mumbai because it’s difficult for people here to give time to their pets. It costs a lot.”

However, her journey to becoming a cat lover began two years ago when her sister spotted a stray kitten during a costume trail. “When I took a picture of it, I fell in love with it at first sight. I told my sister to take it home and we’ll think of something, maybe adopt it,” Ranta recalls.
“I didn’t know if I would be able to take care of it. The affection a kitten gives you is overwhelming, and it (caring) soon became part of my life,” Ranta said, adding that her wonderful experience encouraged her to adopt another cat.

Naming their cats is a story in itself. “My first cat came into our lives when it was just 20 days old, so it was difficult to tell its gender. When I went on a holiday to Goa, I left it with friends for care. At that time, the cat was in a very bad condition – hairless and scratched all over the body, and we gave it medication. When we returned a week later, the cat was all grown up, and for a moment, we thought, ‘It’s our cat, right?’ Then our friends told us it was a male. Initially, we had named it Mushka, but since it sounded a bit too feminine, we changed it to Musha. The second cat is named Theos, which means ‘gift from God’,” she says, smiling.
