New Delhi. Meta-owned WhatsApp has banned more than 67 lakh accounts in India in the month of January in compliance with the new IT Rules 2021. Between January 1 and 31, the company has banned 6,728,000 accounts. WhatsApp said in its monthly report that about 1,358,000 of these accounts were actively banned before any reports from users.
The most popular messaging platform WhatsApp received a record 14,828 complaint reports in the country in January and action was taken on 10.

‘Accounts Action’ refers to reports where WhatsApp took remedial action based on the report and taking action means either banning an account or resulting in reinstatement of a previously banned account.
According to the company, ‘This user-security report includes information about complaints received and actions taken by WhatsApp, as well as WhatsApp’s own actions to address abuse on our platform.’
To empower millions of Indian social media users, the Central Government has launched the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC), which looks into their grievances regarding content and other issues.

The newly created panel, a step towards strengthening the country’s digital laws to rein in Big Tech companies, will look into appeals made by users against decisions of social media platforms.
WhatsApp said in a statement, ‘We assembled a team of experts in engineers, data scientists, analysts, researchers, and law enforcement to prevent and combat abuse, in addition to security features and controls between end-to-end encrypted messaging services. .’
Let us tell you that in December last year, WhatsApp had banned more than 69 lakh bad accounts in the country.
