Following a series of suicides among college students in Odisha, police have launched awareness programs in various educational institutions in northern and western parts of the state.
The state’s higher education department is also planning to launch a campaign in all colleges and universities across the state to deal with the rising suicide rate among young people.
In the last four weeks, four women, three of whom were college students, allegedly died of suicide in the state.
Northern Range IG Himanshu Lal told PTI over phone, “It is also our responsibility to create awareness among students, especially women. We launched awareness campaigns in colleges in Sambalpur, Bargarh, Bolngir, Jharsuguda and Sonpur districts.”
Lal mentioned that awareness campaign includes real -life stories, expert advice from psychologists and information about helpline and counseling services available to students.
He said that he had received tremendous support from students, parents and local residents.
During the campaign on Tuesday and Wednesday, officials of local police stations visited colleges and assured the students that the police personnel are always for them.
Students were informed about the existing laws and how to address various issues instead of considering suicide, Lal said.
“In this process, I noticed that the gap between the students and the police is decreasing. Students are getting acquainted with policemen and women and are courageous for the police to open. This is a very positive sign that will help reduce the rate of suicides among students,” Lal said.
Similarly, under the guidance of Dig Eastern Range, Satyajit Naik, a group of police personnel visited Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore on Tuesday and started a mental health awareness program.
The DSP rank officer said, “On August 12, it was selected to organize an awareness program at FM College as a month ago, a second-year female student of the integrated bed department resorted to self-publication two days later and died two days later. It was necessary for the police to start a mental health awareness campaign from FM College.”
Nayak mentioned that this initiative underlines the importance of helping and seeking support during challenging times, promoting a community that gives importance to mental health and well -being. He said that the purpose of this incident is to cultivate the culture of support and care, encouraging individuals to prioritize their mental health.
According to another official, the campaign wants to educate women students about important issues of suicide and self-explosion, led by committed police officers, promotes access to flexibility, awareness and support systems. Programs are being organized in collaboration with educational institutions.
A female police officer said, “Our aim is to make women students mentally strong, fighting with knowledge in law, combating strategies and learning to face resources to navigate emotional and psychological challenges.”
Through interactive sessions and counseling workshops, police officers are engaged with students to deal with mental health stigma, encourage open interactions and underline the importance of taking help during difficult times.
These efforts also focus on promoting community spirit to build self-esteem, manage stress and prevent the feelings of separation, said Lal said.
Additionally, Odisha’s Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj mentioned that the department’s initiative under the Shaktisri Yojana is to promote mental welfare among the students and prevent them from taking strict action during the challenging period.
The campaign set to launch soon will educate students at emotional flexibility and seek support if stressed. He said that it would also promote a supportive environment, to help those in crisis to encourage colleagues, teachers and parents, he said.
