According to the report of WABetaInfo, a new option named ‘Strict Account Settings’ has been seen in the new iOS beta version of WhatsApp. This feature is present in Privacy > Advanced section.
On turning on this mode, WhatsApp will give the user the option to activate ‘Extreme Protection Mode’ i.e. a set of strict security rules. After activating it, WhatsApp will automatically make some changes that will help in keeping the account secure.
How will security be done?
- Once this mode is activated, WhatsApp will automatically impose some limits.
- Media and attachments coming from unknown numbers will be blocked.
- Only trusted contacts will be able to call or message.
- Account settings will be locked so that no one can make changes.
However, WhatsApp has also said that turning on this mode may affect the quality of calls and messages. Automatic protection features will also be available. According to WABetaInfo, upon activating Strict Mode, WhatsApp will automatically turn on many more security features, like,
- Silencing unknown callers,
- Allowing group invites only to saved contacts,
- Turn off link preview,
- Giving alerts when encryption code changes,
- Activating two-step verification automatically,
- And hiding profile information from unknown numbers.
All these features are already present in WhatsApp, but now they can be activated in one click. This feature can be especially useful for journalists, activists and public figures.
When will it be launched?
At present the company has not announced the release date of this feature. It is currently in beta testing phase, so it may take some time to reach all users.
