Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) has started a big facility for the passengers of the city. Now complete real-time schedule, live train location and route information of Hyderabad Metro is available directly on Google Maps. Earlier, passengers had to depend on HMRL’s app or website to know the arrival and departure time of the train, but now they can see the exact time of the next train, at which station to get down and the estimated time of the entire journey on Google Maps itself. The facility covers all 57 stations on the Red, Blue and Green Lines and around 7,000 trains a week.
Hyderabad. Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) has taken a big step towards making public transport in the city more convenient and digital. Now complete information about Hyderabad Metro, including live train timings, real-time schedules and routes, is available on Google Maps. This step of Hyderabad Metro is being considered as another important step in the direction of smart city. Before this new feature, passengers could see Hyderabad Metro routes and stations on Google Maps, but they had to rely on HMRL’s official app or website to know the exact arrival and departure timings of trains. Now it is not so.
Real-time tracking
Google Maps will now show the live location of Hyderabad Metro trains and the exact time of arrival of the next train. Passengers can now easily plan their journey by metro from any place. The app will tell them which station to get off at, where and from which line to change and the estimated total journey time. The facility includes 57 stations across all three metro routes of the city—Red Line, Blue Line and Green Line—a total of 118 station sections and the complete schedule of approximately 7,000 trains running weekly.
How was this possible?
This facility became possible after an important decision of HMRL. HMRL has released all its metro schedule and route data in a public and standard format. GTFS is a global standard that transit agencies around the world use to share their schedules with services like Google Maps, which Google has integrated into its own systems.
What will be the benefit to the passengers?
Passengers will no longer have to wait unnecessarily at the station, they can check the exact time of the next train even before leaving home or office. Now there is no need to visit different apps or websites to plan a journey. Google Maps, which is already on most people’s phones, is providing all the information on a single platform.
