Sunscreen is a skincare required, we all heard it. But what if one product we trust to protect our skin can actually harm it? Cosmetologist Dr. According to Mahanaz Jahn Begum, not all sunscreen are made in the same way, and more importantly, not all are suitable for every skin type. While sunscreen protects us from premature aging, sunburn and skin cancer, some formulas can trigger unexpected side effects, especially if you are not using the right for your skin. From acne breakout to hormone concerns, this is just time to see beyond the SPF (Sun Protection Factor) number.

Side effects of sunscreen

Here are 6 hidden side effects of sunscreen, most people have not been told, and how to make safe options when it comes to your skin:

1. Acne breakout

If you have oily or acne-prone skin, thick and smooth sunscreen may be your biggest enemy. Many water-resistant or long-wear sunscreen clogs pores, which suddenly break out. Dr. Begum told health shots, “I often see that patients flare up after beach trips or external events.” Solution? Choose non-comedogenic gel-based or powder sunscreen that feel light and will not chok your skin.

2. Allergic reactions

Redness, irritation, or stubborn rashes after the use of sunscreen? You can react to chemical filters such as oxybenzone or advengone. These sunscreen are common criminals behind allergies. Dr. Begum advised to switch on minerals (physical) sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. “They are gentlers on the skin and are safe for sensitive types,” she notes. Always patch-test before full application.

3. Eye irritation

We are all there, sunscreen dripping into your eyes with sweat, and suddenly, you are taking nap through tears. Chemical-based sunscreen, in particular, can cause acute prick. To avoid this, use sunscreen sticks around the eye area.

4. Hormonal dissolution

According to Harvard Health Publishing, some sunscreen materials, especially oxybenzone, may act as endocrine disintegors, mimicking estrogen in the body. While more research is required, Dr. Many experts including Begum took care. “I advise people, especially pregnant women, to avoid chemical sunscreen completely,” she says. Opt for mineral-based, fragrant options as it is better and safe.

5. Can make hyperpigmentation worse

The irony is that some sunscreen can make black spots or melasma worse. Materials like fragrance and alcohol can irritate melanin -rich skin, which can cause more pigmentation. If you have a medium to deep skin tone, look for sunscreen without any bottlenecks and with excess iron oxide, providing better protection against visible light.

6. Dryness

Is your sunscreen causing dry, flaky skin? Many alcohol-threads remove moisture. Initially, they may feel refreshed, especially for oily skin, but they can disrupt your skin obstruction. Choose hydrating cream with additional moisturizers such as hyaluronic acid or ceramids to maintain balance.

So, is sunscreen bad?

no way. It is still one of the most important stages in your skincare routine. But as Dr. Begum said, “Sunscreen should protect your skin, not it under stress.” Choose one depending on your skin type:

  • Oily Skin: Go for Gel or Powder
  • Dry skin: Use moisturizing cream
  • Sensitive skin: minerals, fragrance-free
  • Pregnant women: zinc oxide, stick with titanium dioxide
