Superstar Kamal Haasan was sworn in as a member of the Rajya Sabha Member Parliament on Friday. Tamil actor and politician took oath by fellow MPs in Tamil to resonate the thamps on the table.
The ‘Thug Jeevan’ actor expressed his happiness on his important political milestone. 69-year-old Makkal Needi Mime (MNM) founder and actor-politician, first talking to media persons outside Parliament, said, “I am very proud and respected.”
Kamal Haasan’s election in the upper house is an important milestone in his political journey, as he first considers a national legislative role.
“Today, as I raised to confirm as a member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, I worshiped with humility and weighed with a wisdom. I have sworn to maintain the Constitution of India – not as a ritual of formalities, but later as a promise to serve my soul with a message.
Haasan was nominated with the support of the ruling DMK -led coalition, which promised him the Rajya Sabha seat in exchange for MNM’s support during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
‘The moment is not mine alone’
“This moment is not mine alone. I share it with my people, whose voices I take to the power chambers. I share it with the soil of Tamil Nadu, who has nurtured me-a land that has produced poets and revolutionaries, thinkers and reformers, and above, which citizens believe in justice, dirty and self-rescue,”
Hassan filed his nomination along with other political leaders in the presence of Chief Minister MK Stalin, Deputy CM Udayanidhi Stalin at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat on 6 June. On June 12, Haasan, who is the president of MNM, and five others were elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu.
Five other DMK poets Salma (a Rokakaiya Malik), SR Civalingam, P Wilson (who enter their second term), and AIADMK’s INDADAI and Dhanapal.
With reverence for the constitution
Haasan promised that he would try to become the voice of Tamil Nadu in Delhi – clear, kind and committed – and he would speak not for a community but for the common good.
This moment is not mine alone. I share it with my people, whose voices I take to the chambers of power.
“With reverence for the Constitution, with faith in democracy, and with love for my people, I start this chapter as a result, but as a beginning,” he said.
