To ensure transparency and reduce manual intervention in the evaluation of medical colleges, data from the Aadhaar Enabled Biometric Attendance System (AEBAS) portal will be used by the National Medical Commission, thereby eliminating the need for physical inspection. However, NMC Secretary Dr B Srinivas on Thursday said some surprise inspections will continue by the commission to verify the data being uploaded on the portal as well as to check the physical infrastructure.
To address the problem of ghost faculty in medical colleges and to ensure attendance of medical students and faculty, NMC is already conducting its assessment based on AEBES portal which is already operational for the last one year. According to Dr. Srinivas, “Using data from Aadhaar enabled biometric attendance system dashboard will bring greater transparency. As far as attendance is concerned, an average of seventy-five per cent attendance on working days of two months will be taken into account to arrive at a decision as to whether a college is meeting the criteria or not. Earlier the inspection was done even for a single day’s attendance, he said, adding that all the data would be available at any time.
Apart from this, NMC will also launch a portal where medical colleges can appeal online for any redressal of their compliance related to assessment. Dr. Srinivas said, “This new portal will be operational soon after taking security clearance from the concerned agencies to avoid hacking. “Once it opens, each college will submit its data right from the beginning of the establishment of the college.” Additionally, the NMC released the “Minimum Standard of Requirements for Postgraduate Courses-2023 (PGMSR-2023)” guidelines in January to deal with the issue of ghost faculty burden in medical colleges, allowing faculty to conduct private classes during college hours. Banned from participating in practice. On PG students.
The guidelines state that attendance of at least 75 percent of the total working days for the required number of faculty will be mandatory. As per the guidelines, 80 per cent of hospital beds throughout the year should be occupied by patients requiring inpatient care and a minimum of 15 per cent of the total beds in the department providing postgraduate training should be intensive care unit (ICU) beds. High Dependency Unit (HDU) beds belong exclusively to that department.
