An assistant professor in the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar, Assam has been suspended after allegations of sexual harassment by a first year student. Registrar Prof. Asim Roy confirmed the suspension of Professor Raju at AyraNews24x7.com.
According to a handwritten confession letter going viral on social media, a student of Electrical Engineering Department accused Raju of tampering in his chamber on 20 March. He alleged that he had called him to discuss his educational performance and improperly touched him on the pretext of questioning his low marks.
The student wrote in his note, “He asked me to give me the reason for his low score and then suddenly started touching me. He asked me to feel comfortable and suggested that if I follow them, my numerals could be managed.”
Following the allegations, the students staged the protest demanding the removal of Raju. The protests continued through Thursday night and were eventually closed on Friday morning when the administration assured them of their suspension.
Raju has faced similar allegations before. In 2021, a student accused him of sexual harassment, but a local court left him due to lack of evidence and absence of the complainant during the proceedings.
The Internal Complaint Committee (ICC) in NIT Silchar has launched a formal inquiry into the allegations. The workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Prevention) Act, 2013, in the Act, 2013, took over sexual harassment cases under sexual harassment of women, the committee has assured a fair and intensive investigation.
Officials of NIT Silchar have not yet issued an official statement on further action against the accused professor.
