Cleaning your vagina doesn’t have to be complicated. With so many products promising to ‘freshen things up’, it’s easy to get confused. But the truth is that your vagina is self-sufficient and easy to care for. UK-based GP (general practitioner) Dr Amir Khan shared some facts, and said: Keep it simple, and dispel the myths. In an Instagram video on October 8, Dr Khan, a GP who works with the National Health Service (NHS), addressed a number of common misconceptions about vaginal health in a post titled: ‘Vagina myths that need to disappear’. The doctor said the vagina is a self-cleaning organ and does not need special, often perfumed, washes or sprays, which can disrupt its natural bacterial balance and pH.
Myth #1: You need special soap to clean your vagina
She said, “Okay, ladies. Let’s talk about vaginal health because there are some myths that seriously need to be dispelled. And I mean right now. Number one, you don’t need to clean down there with special soaps, wipes, or sprays. The vagina is self-cleaning. It has its own perfect balance of bacteria and pH. However scented products can really mess it up and cause infections. So, stay away from scented soaps.”
Myth #2: Vaginal discharge is a sign of infection
Dr. Khan also clarified that daily vaginal discharge is normal and a sign of health. “Discharge does not necessarily mean there is something wrong. Most women have discharge every day. This is how the vagina keeps itself healthy. Changes in color, odor, or texture may require investigation, but clear or white discharge is usually normal,” she said.

Myth #3: Strong odor means poor hygiene
Dr. Khan shared that natural vaginal odor does not indicate poor hygiene, adding, “If there is an odor, it means you are dirty. No, not at all. Every vagina has a natural odor. That means. If it suddenly changes or becomes stronger, see your doctor. But otherwise, you should not smell like a scented coconut candle.”
Myth #4: Tampons can get lost inside you
Dr. Khan also debunked the myth that tampons can get lost inside the body, reassured people that the cervix prevents objects from moving, and advised against panic if one gets stuck. She added, “And number four, it’s big. Can a tampon get lost inside you? No, it can’t. Your cervix, which is at the top of the vagina, is like a closed door. There’s nothing getting out beyond that. Sometimes a tampon can get stuck at the top, but it doesn’t get lost. And your doctor has seen all this before. So, please don’t panic and definitely don’t go fishing with kitchen utensils.”
“So, the next time someone tries to sell you feminine wash or tells you that tampons can disappear into your organs, remember that your vagina has been taking care of itself perfectly for millions of years. Trust her. She’s got this,” Dr. Khan concludes.
