NHAI has partnered with Reliance Jio to launch a mobile-based safety alert system that will warn highway users about accident-prone stretches through SMS and calls.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has partnered with Reliance Jio to launch a new mobile-based safety alert system aimed at improving travel safety on India’s national highway network. Under a newly signed memorandum of understanding (MoU), the system will use Jio’s 4G and 5G telecommunication networks to send advance warnings to passengers when they approach risky or dangerous road sections.
Highway users will receive alerts on their phones about accident-prone stretches, stray-cattle areas, fog-affected areas, emergency turns and other danger spots. These notifications will be sent through SMS, WhatsApp and even high-priority calls, ensuring that drivers will be well informed before reaching such places and they can drive slower or more carefully.
How will the system work
The initiative aims to provide timely information to drivers. Instead of relying on new roadside warning boards or equipment, the system will work through Jio’s existing telecom infrastructure. Using existing mobile towers, alerts can be issued quickly without the need to install additional hardware on highways.
The safety alert system will also be gradually linked to NHAI’s digital services, including the ‘RajmargYatra’ mobile app and the National Highway emergency helpline number 1033. Once connected, passengers will be able to access safety updates and emergency assistance through a more coordinated digital network.
Pilot, expansion and compliance
The automated system will work for all Jio users traveling on or around national highways. Alerts will reach drivers before they enter identified danger areas, giving them ample time to adjust speed and remain alert. In the first phase of the programme, pilot projects will be launched under some regional NHAI offices.
These tests will help more accurately identify risk areas and fine-tune alert levels before expanding the system to other parts of the country. Officials confirmed that the initiative will comply with existing regulations and data-protection requirements. NHAI has said it also plans to work with other telecom service providers to expand the coverage of security alerts across all networks.
