Actress Nayanthara recently landed in trouble after she promoted the alleged health benefits of hibiscus tea on her social media, where she described the drink as a cure for everything from diabetes to acne. However, she deleted the post after a doctor on social media called it false. Hepatologist Cyriac AB Phillips, popularly known as The Liver Doctor on social media, was the one who criticised her for the post.
Nayanthara’s post
In a now-deleted social media post, the actress had shared the purported benefits of hibiscus tea, and credited her healthcare expert Munmun Ganeriwal for it.
She wrote, “This is my absolute favourite tea, and the most exciting one in the meal plan prepared by the genius @munmun.ganeriwal. It has been used in Ayurveda for a long time. It is high in antioxidants and is helpful in diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and heart diseases. It is very cooling for the body so it is great for people who have acne-prone skin, boils etc due to heat.
She further added, “Hibiscus tea is great for the monsoon season as it is rich in vitamins and keeps our immune system balanced. It has antibacterial effects which prevent seasonal infections/illness. P.S. Anyone who needs the recipe can ask @munmun.ganeriwal. Stay healthy. Stay happy.”
Refutation of post
Accusing Nayanthara of misleading her millions of followers, The Liver Doc slammed her on X (formerly known as Twitter).
“It would have been fine if she said that hibiscus tea is delicious. But no, she has to go ahead and beat the drum of her health-illiteracy and also claim that hibiscus tea helps in diabetes, high blood pressure, acne, is antibacterial and prevents flu. Well, none of the above claims have been proven,” the post reads.
In the post, the doctor pointed out that Nayanthara’s post seemed like “an advertisement for her celebrity nutritionist.”
“It also seems like the post was an ad for their “celebrity nutritionist,” who has a bachelor of science degree in diet and nutrition and who describes herself as [ as the only gut microbiome specialist in the world who combines traditional Indian foods, ancient Indian yogic practices and Ayurveda principles with gut microbiota study to understand and fight obesity and other diseases, – which literally translates to “absolute BS,” bordering on quackery,” added the note.
After the backlash
Nayanthara has deleted her post from her Instagram account, but social media users shared their worry around celebrities putting out such posts. Sometime back, the Liver Doc had taken on actor Samantha’s post that suggested inhaling hydrogen peroxide to prevent and treat respiratory viral infections, following which the actor had shared a clarification note explaining her side of the story.
