Why is it celebrated only on 28th February?

National Science Day was first celebrated on the day when Indian physicist Sir Chandrashekhar Venkata Raman (CV Raman) announced the discovery of the “Raman Effect” in 1928, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930. The history of National Science Day can be traced back to 1986 when the Government of India accepted the proposal of the National Council for Science and Technology Communication and designated 28 February as National Science Day to commemorate the discovery of the “Raman Effect”.

Announcing the theme of National Science Day 2024 in the first week of February, Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Science and Technology, said, “This year will not only mark a new era but also an opportunity for both the public and the scientific fraternity Will present. To collaborate, work together, domestically and internationally, and contribute to the well-being of India and humanity as a whole.”

During the announcement of the NSD 2024 theme, the government said, “We are among the top five countries globally in scientific research publications, showing a significant growth from 81st rank in 2015 to 40th in the Global Innovation Index (GII) and our patent filings have crossed 90,000. Which is the highest in two decades.”

“Indian scientific breakthroughs have reached from the laboratory to the moon; With the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the South Pole of the Moon, India becomes the first country to achieve this feat,” the minister said.
