The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)’s Hubble Space Telescope has released a stunning image of a triple-star system. The triple-star system is located approximately 550 light years away.
NASA reported that the triple-star system is composed of the variable stars HP Tau, HP Tau G2 and HP Tau G3. It says, “These three stars shine from a hollow cavity in a reflection nebula, illuminating the surrounding clouds.”
Describing the HP Tau star, NASA said that HP Tau is classified as a T Tauri star, which is a young variable star that has not yet started nuclear fusion, but is hydrogen-fueled, similar to the Sun. Starting to evolve into a star. T Tauri stars are typically less than 10 million years old and are often found trapped in the clouds of gas and dust from which they formed.
“The brightness of a variable star varies over time, but the brightness of a T Tauri star has both periodic and random fluctuations,” NASA said, adding that random changes can affect things like brightness on the star’s surface. while periodic changes may be caused by giant sunspots moving in and out of the scene.
Elaborating further about HP Tau, NASA said that it is 550 light years away from Earth and is the youngest star in the three star system.
Meanwhile, the Hubble Space Telescope was launched in 1990 and has since changed the infrastructure of our understanding of the universe, from determining the atmospheric composition of planets around other stars to discovering dark energy.
