The National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Hubble Space Telescope has shared a stunning image of a cosmic object called the Gomez Hamburger. According to the US space agency, the object is located about 6,500 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius.
NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, launched in 1990, has transformed our fundamental understanding of the universe, from determining the atmospheric composition of planets around other stars to the discovery of dark energy.
Coming back to Gomez Hamburger, NASA further explained that, “This phenomenon was created by a dying Sun-like star shedding its outer layers.”
Explaining the similarities between the hamburger and this celestial giant, NASA said, “The ingredients of this giant are dust and light; the hamburger “buns” are the light reflected off the dust and the “patty” is the dark band of dust in the middle, hiding the dying star.” The image was shared by the US space agency on Hamburger Day, which was celebrated on May 28.
Internet users couldn’t stop themselves from commenting on the adorable image of the cosmic object posted by NASA.
“Mother nature has a sense of humor,” one user said.
Another user commented, “Awesome, awesome”
Some others wrote, “You have a great burger.”
“Space burgers and stargazing — it’s proof that you can have it all.”
One user also argued against the notion that Gomez’s hamburger was created by a dying star, and instead suggested that it was more likely formed by a protoplanetary disk around a new star.
Meanwhile, NASA announced in a press release on May 26 that the first of two climate satellites designed to study heat emissions at Earth’s poles was launched. The agency’s PREFIRE (Polar Radiant Energy in the Far-Infrared Experiment) mission consists of two shoebox-sized cube satellites, or CubeSats, that will measure the amount of heat emitted by Earth into space from two of the coldest, most remote regions of the planet. Data from this PREFIRE mission will help researchers more accurately forecast changes in Earth’s ice, oceans and weather in a warming climate.
