The National Aeronautics Space Agency (NASA) has recently shared rare pictures of the farthest known galaxy with humans. Rare pictures have been taken by NASA’s James Webb Telescope, also known as Webb or JWST. This galaxy is named JADES-GS-z14-0 and is about 300 million years old from the Big Bank. These pictures have been taken by the James Webb Telescope during the study of Cosmid Dawn by astronomers.
In addition to JADES-GS-z14-0, NASA has also discovered another distant galaxy, JADES-GS-z14-1, which is almost as far away. It ranks second in the ranking of the earliest galaxies ever observed by humans.
What is cosmic dawn?
Cosmic Dawn is the period in space during the first few hundred million years of the Big Bang, which is believed to be the event behind the birth of innumerable galaxies. According to NASA, these galaxies can help solve the mystery behind the formation of gas, stars and black holes. These galaxies can also help in understanding the nature of the universe when it was very young.
The mass of the oldest galaxy is millions of times greater than the mass of the Sun
The US space agency was able to see the galaxy for the first time in January 2024. After continued observations and calculations, it was found that JADES-GS-z14-0 was intrinsically very luminous and had a mass greater than the Sun. Analysis of images captured by the James Webb Telescope shows that the galaxy is “several hundred million times larger than the mass of the Sun,” NASA wrote in its blog.
Another surprising revelation about the galaxy is the presence of strongly ionized gases. The initial images captured by NASA indicate the presence of strongly ionized gas emissions in the galaxy. These emissions can be seen as bright emission lines emanating from hydrogen and oxygen.
