The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has shared breathtaking images of moonrise from a “unique location” of the International Space Station in a latest social media post.
“Layers of orange and black appear beneath the blue horizontal stripe running across the centre of the image. The crescent moon is white and stands out amid the blackness of space,” the description of the post on Instagram says.
This photo taken by astronaut Matthew Dominick shows a crescent moon above Earth’s atmosphere. He described it as, “A small piece of the moon emerges from the night clouds and appears to be looking toward the horizon awaiting the imminent sunrise.”
Dominic is the commander of NASA and SpaceX’s Crew-8 mission, which will be launched to the ISS on March 3, 2024. It includes Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexander Grebenkin and NASA astronauts Michael Barrett and Jeanette Epps.
It is noteworthy that the main purpose of the experiments on the ISS is to understand how much science is required to sustain life on another planet.
NASA is constantly sharing pictures from the ISS. In February, it shared a picture of the Earth and the Moon in one frame.
It said, “The Earth appears blue and the atmosphere has light white clouds extending from the bottom left to the top right of the image. There is a dark spot around the Moon.”
NASA has been in the news due to problems with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, which carried NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore to the ISS earlier this month. They were supposed to return home after a week, but could not do so due to several problems with the aircraft.
There was a small leak of helium while launching the Starliner into orbit on a rocket and several more leaks occurred during the flight. Helium is used to pressurize fuel for the thrusters.
Now NASA and Boeing are doing some tests to understand the problem and solve it. Reports suggest that it may take months for the astronauts to return.
