NASA Photos: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Hubble Space Telescope has released images of galaxies. Launched in 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope transformed the fundamental understanding of the universe, from determining the atmospheric composition of planets around other stars to discovering dark energy.
NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has unveiled a striking new image of N11, a vibrant star-forming region located about 160,000 light-years from Earth in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The LMC is a dwarf galaxy that orbits our galaxy. NASA Hubble describes N11 as a cloud of gas that resembles cotton candy. It said, “Since it is one of the most energetic regions in the LMC, astronomers used Hubble to investigate different parts of its dynamic environment.”
Hubble has also shared a striking new image of a dwarf irregular galaxy called VV124. It described VV124 as a “relatively unaffected, old galaxy”. It is located 4 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major.
Another image shared by Hubble shows the image of M33, which is 2.7 million light-years away from Earth and is located in the Triangulum constellation. M33 is about half the size of the Milky Way and is the third largest galaxy in our local group after the Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way.
NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has released a remarkable image of one of the most active galaxies in the cosmic realm, NGC 1569. Known as a starburst galaxy, NGC 1569 forms stars at a rate 100 times faster than our galaxy.
Leo A is 2.6 million light-years from Earth and is located in the Leo constellation. NASA Hubble described it as “one of the most isolated members of our “Local Group” of galaxies.” “Its open distribution of stars allows light from distant galaxies to shine through,” it said. Leo A’s young stars are found mainly at the galaxy’s center, while older stars become more numerous toward the outer regions. “This means that stars here probably formed from the outside in, or that older stars migrated to the outskirts of Leo A in the early stages of its evolution,” Hubble said.
The Tucana Dwarf Galaxy is located in the Tucana constellation, about 3 million light-years from Earth. It is one of the most remote galaxies in the Milky Way’s galactic neighborhood. “As a dwarf spheroidal galaxy, it is much smaller and less luminous than most other dwarf galaxies. The Tucana Dwarf can also be used as a cosmic fossil given its relatively isolated distribution of old stars,” NASA’s Hubble said.
