Nabha Natesh was at the top of her game before the pandemic. She gave a big hit as Sashakt Chandni in iSmart Shankar; The world was his oyster. People loved him. Advertisements and film offers started coming. But then the epidemic spread. Like everyone else, Nabha, confined at home, initially enjoyed solitude. Then she became worried. “I felt like things were going out of my control,” she recalls in a conversation with Hindustan Times. (Also read: Nabha Natesh returns with Nikhil Siddharth’s Swayambhu)

But things really went out of her control in 2022 when she got into a major car accident and since then it took her a long time to recover. Even as her colleagues were coming back to the sets, she was still trying to get her strength back, healing fractures and undergoing multiple surgeries. “I broke my shoulder and it took all my focus and time,” she says. With her last release being the 2021 OTT film Maestro, fans wondered when Nabha would make a comeback. Well…he’s ready now!

‘My wish list is endless now, I have lots of time’

Nabha says she was always ‘looking for good roles’ and this forced break has further strengthened her resolve. “I have always waited patiently for good roles to come my way, to work with directors who believe in me. There was no plan for it,” she explains, “and now, I feel like my best is yet to come because I’m not done yet. My wish list of people I want to work with and roles I want to play is endless now because I have a lot of time to think.

And one of the things he thought about at this time was how much he didn’t care about the pitfalls that came with fame – like loss of privacy. I remark, this is a rare thing for a celebrity to say. “This (performing) is all I have done my whole life, this is what I love. I don’t feel like I’ve lost anything. I realized that receiving the love of the audience is the best feeling in the world. I was a theater artiste before I came into films, so it’s a completely different experience when people suddenly recognize you, no matter where you go. But when I couldn’t work, it felt like a part of me was missing. So, I will not complain,” she says.

‘You break bones and realize you’re not immortal’

Nabha’s fans became worried when she revealed the reason for her being MIA in early 2023 – that she met with an accident and had to undergo surgery. But after that the actress remained active on social media as always and shared pictures from her travels, photo shoots and even her love for creating art.

She says, “I think there has been a big change in the way I look at life now, like everyone else, I was always trying to be something,” she adds, “Somebody gave me Didn’t force it…it was just my personality, I was happy to do it. But since the accident, I have a lot more respect for my body and mind. My priorities are still the same, but the way I look at things has changed.”

Ask her to elaborate and she says, “I rest when I need to, stop when I want to, without feeling guilty about it. I still have the same desire to do good work, but it’s not driven by blind ambition like before. When you break your bones, you realize you are not immortal…everything is breakable. You can be the best at what you do by honoring your needs.”

But it’s something that everyone realizes, especially in the age of self-care. She adds, “But no one understands how important it is to follow through, unless you’ve done something like me.”

‘I did it my way once, I can do it again’

What Nabha would like more than anything is to return to her roots someday. She was only 19 years old when she debuted in the Kannada film Vajrakaya in 2015. “Even now I see girls in colleges dancing to my songs in films. I look forward to the day when I get to do something important in the language,” she says. But as of now, she has two films lined up in Telugu for her big comeback – Swayambhu, a period action film with Nikhil Siddharth and a yet-to-be-announced comedy thriller.

“I made my way into this film industry on my own through auditions. Nobody gave me anything. I can achieve success, but what happens after that is not in my control. I did it once, I’m sure I can do it again. The audience liked me once, I hope they will like the work I am doing now,” she says. In her look from Swayambhu, she is seen in a period look, which she has never done before. “I have never done a role till date that requires a classical touch. There is a beautiful reflection of my character throughout the film, something that kept me interested,” she adds.

Ask her about the other, mysterious project she’s working on and she falls silent. Prod and she can’t stop herself from saying, “I did workshops for a month to get into the character, it felt like I was going back to my roots in theatre. I’m very excited about it…making people laugh is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. Luckily, the roles I have played over the years have always had an underlying humour, which helped me. Now, I am just waiting for the announcement by the filmmakers.
