My Hero Academia fans have a bittersweet task ahead as they count down the days to the final chapter of Kohei Horikoshi’s superhero manga series. Before the heavy-handed goodbyes leave them emotionally overwhelmed, teary-eyed readers are thoroughly enjoying whatever is left of the shonen series’ final few adventures. Chapter 427 is officially expected to debut on Monday, July 8 at 12 a.m. JST.
The series has already dropped one of its biggest bombs, killing off the most hated villain, Tomura Shigaraki. Despite his horrific end, his complex and layered character still lives on in the heartfelt narrative. The upcoming chapter of the beloved manga will embark on a rollercoaster ride of emotions as Deku finally helps Spinner come to a conclusion about the death of his dear friend.
Renowned My Hero Academia scooper @RukasuMHA dropped spoilers for the next chapter, titled “Who Was Tomura Shigaraki?” The self-explanatory title goes a long way in drawing parallels between how the general public views Shigaraki as a villain – no more, no less – while Spinner’s words reveal a human side to the character that others may never be aware of.

Just like its name, the chapter also begins its intense conversation with a TV program playing in the background – “Who was Tomura Shigaraki?” A reporter gathers the thoughts of people on the street, questioning them about their thoughts about the villain. While some people did not care to sweeten their thoughts and straight away declared him a killer, others described him as a scary person whose death brought them great relief. A third person claimed that he never imagined Shigaraki would become such a deadly threat. Meanwhile, the broadcast also shows the city in ruins, showing the slow progress of its rehabilitation.
Eventually, Deku and Spinner become the focus of the story. At the hospital, the doctor tells Deku how AFO’s peculiar habits were turning him into a Nomu. Their latest research helps them stop the process. Spinner does not go easy on Deku and labels him a “killer.”
Deku is not bothered by these claims and confesses that he came to convey Shigaraki’s message to him. Spinner is taken aback by Deku’s response as he finally relays his friend’s last words, “Tomura Shigaraki fought to the end for destruction.”
Though Spinner initially refuses to accept his claims without thinking, Deku confirms that his message was meant for him. He later tells Deku that he has always seen Tomura as a beacon of hope. Spinner’s emotional despair translates into his growing size. Though he thinks he should stop thinking so he doesn’t hurt himself, he continues to talk about Shigaraki and expresses how grateful he is for making him a part of something bigger than himself.

The doctor tries to intervene, but Deku stops him from getting close. Spinner finally pours his heart out to Deku, confessing that Tomura Shigaraki was his hero. Also, the narrative compares his words to those of the people being interviewed on TV. A man is heard saying, “He was a villain with no ideals who only wanted to destroy.” Contradictory. Spinner presents his character as a man with human qualities, and also adds that Shigaraki loved video games. The people on TV begin to reveal his past, but their views and lack of empathy are miles different from Spinner’s thoughts about him.
After this, Deku shares Shigaraki’s words, “I have to be a hero for them,” explaining that his heart feels deeply for the League. He tries to console Spinner, reminding him that Shigaraki must have thought the same about him, which is why he tried to give him his message.
Spinner expresses his regret, claiming that if he knew what was bothering his friend, he could have helped him more effectively. Additionally, he considers writing a book about Shigaraki, but Deku advises him to write a comic instead.
Pointing to Mezzo Shoji, the spinner gave the “Octopus” a message to do his best.
After meeting Spinner, Deku turns to All Might and Tsukauchi at the hospital. The latter explains how Kai Chisaki was arrested again, and the Hassaikai boss decided to visit him. Chisaki thought he was in a coma, but his treatment helped reduce the effects of the Overhaul Quirk on him. The two engage in a serious conversation as the boss (also Eri’s grandfather) advises him to apologize to Eri for his actions for the rest of his life, claiming that he has no right to forget what he made her endure.
Deku thanked Tsukauchi and said that it was a better option than forcing Eri to relive all of her misery. Later, All Might told Deku that he should go back to school because new first-year students had arrived. In his response, Deku told him that the Hero Course had some extracurricular activities that might keep them apart for a while.
The last page of the chapter supposedly shows the girls yelling, “Todoroki-senpai! Dynamite-senpai!” as they chase after them, while Bakugo responds by yelling the opposite, “All of these girls should be expelled.”
According to My Hero Academia Scooper, the series will also get its final break next week. Horikoshi’s magnum opus is expected to end with an extended epilogue in August, which will serve as a final goodbye to the characters and story.
