Moscow concert attack: Here’s how world leaders react to shootings in Russia

The terror attack came days after Russian President Vladimir Putin consolidated his grip on the country in a highly orchestrated election landslide. More than 40 people have been killed and at least 140 injured in one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in Russia in decades.

The attack was claimed by the Islamic State, ISIS, a terrorist group that once controlled large parts of Iraq and Syria.

Here are some of the reactions from around the world to the deadly shooting at a Moscow concert hall:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the terrorist attack and went to the X forum where he wrote, “India stands in solidarity with the Government and people of the Russian Federation in this hour of grief.”

“Members of the Security Council condemn in the strongest terms the heinous and cowardly terrorist attack on a concert hall in Krasnogorsk, Moscow Region, Russian Federation, on 22 March 2024,” the UN Security Council said in a statement. reuters,

“Security Council members underlined the need to hold the perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice,” the statement further said.

US White House spokesman, John Kirby, said, “The images are horrific and difficult to watch, and our thoughts are obviously with the victims of this terrible, terrible shooting attack.”

Russian Foreign Ministry official Maria Zakharova commented, “The entire world community is obliged to condemn this terrible crime. All efforts are being made to save people.”

Ukraine’s presidential adviser, Mykhailo Podolyak, said, “Let’s get this straight: Ukraine had nothing to do with these events.”

He added, “We are having a full-scale, all-out war with the Russian regular army and the Russian Federation as a country. And regardless of everything else, everything will be decided on the battlefield.”

“All those involved in this crime must be found and brought to justice,” said Yulia Navalnaya, widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni strongly condemned the massacre and said, “The horror of the massacre of innocent civilians in Moscow is unacceptable. Strong and full condemnation of the Italian government for this heinous act of terrorism,” the report said. reuters,

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the attack and said in a statement he “strongly condemns this terrorist attack claimed by the Islamic State.” He said France stood in solidarity with the victims of the shooting.

The European Union said it was “shocked and horrified” by the attack. A spokesman for the bloc said, “The EU condemns any attacks against civilians. Our condolences go out to all Russian citizens who have been affected.”
