More than 55 percent of the students of New Delhi, Delhi University have chosen to continue with the fourth year of the study under a four -year graduate program, before the new academic session starting from 1 August.
According to DU Deputy Chancellor Yogesh Singh, about 31,004 out of 71,000 eligible students have been dropped from the fourth year, meaning that more than 55 percent have chosen to carry forward the alternative final year.
Singh told PTI, “This is according to our expectations. We expected the same number. We are all ready for this new beginning.”
The FYUP introduced under the National Education Policy 2020 allows students to exit with a certificate, diploma or degree after one, two, or three years respectively. Those who complete the fourth year, are awarded the degree of ‘Respect with Research’ with research, entrepreneurship and focus on skill-based learning.
Singh, who called the first fourth year a “game changer”, said, “This is the first time that has been focused on research, entrepreneurship and skill.”
The fourth year of FYUP is being implemented for the first time this year, and while the university sees as encouraging continuity rates, some teachers’ associations and academics have expressed concern about its structure.
Critics have pointed out a lack of clarity about potential dropout risk, unpublished infrastructure and fourth year course. There are also concerns about stretched faculty and limited funding for additional demands of the program.
Addressing these issues, the VC said, “Don’t worry. If facilities are not available, they will be made. It is in the interest of our students.”
He also assured the students and parents that the university has made all necessary arrangements for the first year students and those who enter the fourth year.
He said, “It is a matter of happiness that one of the best higher education institutions in the country is going to start one more academic year. We will welcome our students with open weapons.”
