The monsoon season can be challenging for people prone to infections and allergies. This is the time of the year when people tend to fall sick due to the rapidly changing weather conditions. The moisture and humidity in the air act as a perfect place for bacteria and fungi to grow, leading to a number of infections. From conjunctivitis to styes and fungal infections, eye infections are very common during the monsoon season. Skin allergies also see a sharp rise during this time. Allergies ranging from dermatitis, ringworm, dry skin and itching are very common.
Scabies is a type of skin allergy that causes intense itching and rashes. It is a parasitic infection caused by mites that burrow into the skin and lay eggs. Scabies, if not treated immediately, can lead to several health complications such as septicemia, heart disease and kidney problems.

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Chiranjiv Chhabra, director and chief dermatologist, Alive Wellness Clinic, shared some preventive measures to manage itching.
Maintain personal hygiene:
Regularly bathing with warm water and milk soap can help in staying clean. After getting wet in the rain, we should immediately clean and dry ourselves. We should avoid sharing personal items like towels, clothes and bedding with others.

Care of clothing and bedding:
After use we should wash clothes, bed sheets and towels in hot water and dry them in a hot dryer. We should change bed sheets and clothes frequently.
Environmental cleaning:
We should regularly vacuum living areas, especially carpets, upholstery and mattresses. We should also clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces to reduce the risk of spreading mites.
Avoid close contact:
We should limit physical contact with infected individuals until their treatment is completed.
Use anti-itch medication:
Consult a healthcare provider for proper treatment of scabies, which usually includes topical creams or oral medication. Strictly follow the prescribed treatment regimen to ensure complete elimination of the mites.
Treat all household members with:
Even if only one person shows symptoms, it is advisable to treat all members of the household to prevent the spread of scabies. Make sure pets are also checked and treated, as sometimes they can also carry mites.
Manage the symptoms:
To reduce itching, use a soothing lotion such as calamine or an antihistamine as recommended by the healthcare provider. Avoid itching, as this can lead to a secondary infection.
