Out of the total mobile numbers, around 21.9 crore mobiles are lying unused.Mobile numbers are available in limited numbers in India. To fill this gap, TRAI has prepared a new plan.
New Delhi. In the coming time, you may have to pay money for using your mobile number apart from recharge. Especially, for that number which you have but you are not using it or you are using it very little. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has made this proposal. This charge can be taken on lump sum or yearly basis. TRAI has planned to take this charge from mobile operators for mobile phone or landline numbers. If this rule is implemented then mobile operators will put this burden on the consumers.
TRAI believes that mobile numbers are a public resource, not a private one. Therefore, they need to be used keeping public interest in mind. There is a huge shortage of mobile numbers in the country. According to the rules, if a SIM card is not recharged for a long time, there is a provision to blacklist it. But, mobile operators do not do this for fear of losing the user base. In such a situation, TRAI has now planned to impose a fine on mobile operators for not blacklisting inactive mobile numbers.

The government has the right to mobile number spacing. The government itself issues mobile number series to mobile operators. Since mobile numbers are available in limited numbers, they should be used judiciously. But, this is not happening. Keeping this in mind, TRAI is now planning to impose charges on mobile numbers.
