After an 18-hour wait, the suspense over portfolio allocation for the 30 cabinet ministers of the Narendra Modi government finally ended. The ministers and their teams remained glued to television screens and websites, eagerly awaiting the announcement from Rashtrapati Bhavan.
However, the wait finally ended when he reached Lok Kalyan Marg for the first cabinet meeting of the new government. The Times of India Each minister received an envelope at his seat, containing the departments assigned to him along with the names of the ministers of state responsible for their ministries.
The report said the waiting period this time was longer than during Narendra Modi’s previous two terms, when the President’s Secretariat used to issue the release by noon.
Unlike in 2014, when the names of several portfolios were leaked on the day of swearing-in, this time the details were kept secret until the cabinet meeting was over. As a result, the names of the appointed ministers started appearing on TV screens and websites only after 6:30 pm, after the cabinet meeting ended.
Government observers said this was perhaps the first time that ministers were briefed about their departments through a written note in an envelope.
The full list of portfolios was made public around 7.30 pm when ministers of state with independent charge, among others, were also informed about their allotted ministries, the report said.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took oath as the Prime Minister of India for the third consecutive term along with 71 cabinet colleagues. The next day he allocated the much-awaited portfolios to the Union Ministers.
Key National Democratic Alliance (NDA) allies including JDU, TDP, Shiv Sena, LJP and others secured ministerial berths in the Modi 3.0 Cabinet. Notably, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Janata Dal-United (JD-U) are crucial for the stability of the BJP-led NDA government, with the TDP having 16 MPs and the JD(U) having 12 MPs in the Lok Sabha.
