Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Tuesday that permission was given for a rally at neighboring Meera Bhayandar in which Maharashtra Navneman army leaders had planned to participate, but the party emphasized a specific route, which challenged the law and order.
Officials said the police detained the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Thane and Palghar chief Avinash Jadhav and several other party workers on Tuesday before the rally in the Meera Bhayandar area of Thane. The rally was to compete with a protest by traders against slapping the owner of the food stall for not speaking in Marathi.
The rally was proposed by the Maharashtra ekikaran Samiti in Mira Bhayander Area.
Police requested them to change the route: Fadnavis
Speaking to reporters at the Maharashtra Vidhan Bhavan campus on this issue, Fadnvis said, “There is no opposition to organizing the rally. It was difficult to allow the demanding route. The police requested them to change the route, but the organizers were adamant on a special route.”
“This can cause a situation like traffic or stampede. In such a situation, the police tries to explain and present an alternative route. We are in democracy, all have the right to hold rallies,” he said.
He said, “If they ask for permission for a proper route, we will allow today and tomorrow. Another organization organized a rally from the route approved by the police, but these people remained adamant on a special route,” he said.
On claims that Meera Road in Thane was being used as a test ground for new political experiments, the Chief Minister said that a Marathi person has a “big heart”.
We are in democracy, everyone has the right to hold rallies.
“Marathi people, during attacks on the country, cared about the country and not selfish. A Marathi person cannot be officers of shallow ideas,” he said.
Referring to the sequence of events, Fadnavis said that permission was sought to hold a meeting late Monday night, which was also given.
“But when it came to the rally, they were pushing for a particular route. If permission was given, there could be a law and order situation. For the past several years, we are organizing all rallies and they are always done after consultation with the police.”
