Highlights
- Maruti Suzuki changed its stand on Cafe-3 rules.
- The new Cafe-3 rules will be applicable from April 2027.
- SIAM will now have to reconsider the proposal.
Proposal was sent to the government related to CAFE-3 rules
In December 2024, SIAM handed over a joint proposal to the government regarding the Cafe-3 rules. All companies agreed in this. These new rules are going to be implemented from April 2027, which aim to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) emanating from new passenger vehicles. But now differences are coming out on this proposal and due to this, the possibility of delay or change in the process of full rules has increased.
There should be so much average emission level of all trains
According to Mint’s report, under the Cafe-3 rules, the government has proposed that the average emission level of all the vehicles should be 91.7 grams of CO2 per kilometer, which has been fixed for a train weighing about 1,170 kg. That is, companies will have to make vehicles that consume less fuel and are less harmful to the environment. CAFE rules give the target to companies to keep the average emission of all their sold vehicles in a fixed limit. With this, they have to make more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles. However, now differences between companies have started coming up.
Maruti Suzuki changed its stand on emission rules
SIAM President and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle Business MD Shailesh Chandra said, “It has been seen in recent times that some companies have formed a separate opinion about Cafe-3.” India’s largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki has now changed its stand on carbon emission rules, which has created confusion throughout the auto sector.
Most of Maruti’s vehicles are light and small size and the company does not even have any electric cars, so more strict emission standards are applying to them. On the other hand, it becomes easy for companies selling electric vehicles to achieve this target as their average emission rate decreases significantly. Now SIAM will have to talk to its member companies again to decide whether any change should be made in the proposal sent in December 2024 or not.
