Designer Manish Malhotra, who has been styling Bollywood’s biggest stars for nearly three decades, is now turning to a filmmaker. After grooming generations of actors, the fashion mogul is turning his love for cinema into storytelling with his upcoming romantic drama cheeky love Under his own banner.

Now, in conversation with Varinder Chawla, Manish opens up about casting Vijay Varma in the lead role – and reveals that the actor reminds him of none other than Shah Rukh Khan of the 1990s.
“Vijay has the youthful qualities of Shahrukh Khan of the 90s.”
Manish said that in today’s industry, the screens are filled with “boys and girls” rather than “young men and women” and Vijay brings a rare depth and maturity that sets him apart. “Today they are boys… We don’t look at men. And Vijay has that in this film… That’s why we thought about him too because Vijay has that quality of a young man. It’s his looks, it’s his height, just the way he is. There’s a certain modernity and contemporariness, but somewhere there’s still maturity,” he said.
He further added, “I don’t know why. He reflects it in his personality as well, and I think Pappan in this film…the boy played by Vijay is a young man, you know. So it’s also bringing that male-hero back on screen, which is what Shah Rukh did in the 90s. Because otherwise you only see boys on screen – it’s always a boy and a girl, never a young man and a young woman.”
