A section of Manipur Police commandos on Wednesday staged a symbolic protest by laying down their “weapons” over allegations that senior officers had asked them to leave the house after an armed group of around 200 militants ransacked the residence of the Imphal Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP). Told him to control himself. West abducted him and his security guard outside his home in retaliation for an attempt to detain terrorists in the ethnic violence-hit state, NDTV reported.
Later, “ASP Imphal West and his security guard were rescued from Kwakithel Konjeng Likai area and admitted to Raj Medicity for medical treatment. A case has been registered in this regard and investigation has begun,” Manipur Police said in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).
A video viral on social media from Imphal purportedly shows dozens of commandos laying down their weapons at a compound of their unit. According to Hindustan Times report, “…they are unhappy with the state government for not giving them a free hand to deal with armed miscreants.”
The Manipur Police statement did not name the group behind the officer’s kidnapping, but people with direct knowledge of the matter said the radical Meitei organization Arambai Tenggol was involved in the incident.
Media reports said ASP Imphal West was kidnapped after some members of Arambai Tenggol were detained earlier in the day on charges of brandishing weapons and stealing vehicles.
Members of Arambai Tenggol have been accused of murder, attacks on security forces, extortion, arson, etc. Kuki groups have said that the group has the support of politicians.
Arambai Tenggol had last month called 38 MPs and other Meitei politicians to take an oath to protect the “integrity of Manipur”. At least three MLAs were attacked for not supporting the state government. Certainly, no MLA has filed a complaint.
More than 200 people have been killed and nearly 50,000 displaced in caste violence in Manipur since May last year. Meitei people constitute about 53% of the population of Manipur and they mainly live in the Imphal Valley.
