The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) is considering exploring Open Book Examination (OBE) following the lead of CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education), the state board chief has said.
MSBSHSE Chairman Sharad Gosavi said on February 29 that the MSBSHSE board will make a plan and implement the OBE pattern in some schools.

“We will analyze the feedback received from the exam and assess how the students performed,” Mid-Day quoted Sharad Gosavi as saying.

Gosavi suggested that the state government consider testing the OBE pattern in state board schools also. Meanwhile, the CBSE board is planning to implement a pilot run of Open Book Examination (OBE) for select subjects in classes IX, X, XI and XII during internal examinations.

‘No decision yet’
The publication quoted a senior school education department official as saying, “Although no decision has been taken yet, there have been discussions within state education circles about the potential benefits of this pattern, such as enhancing analytical skills among students. To enhance learning and discourage cramming.” That being said.
The official further said, “However, any decision will be taken only after thorough testing and evaluation to ensure that it is beneficial for the students. At present no concrete decision has been taken on this matter.

The pilot run for the open book examination will mainly focus on subjects like English, Mathematics and Science for classes IX and X as well as English, Mathematics and Biology for classes IX and XII. This will take place in specially selected schools during November and December this year to be in line with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023.

CBSE is taking assistance from Delhi University for this pilot project to achieve the primary objective which is to evaluate the time required for students to complete such tests and to collect feedback from both teachers and students. The development and design of the pilot test is scheduled to be completed by June.
