The ongoing Mahakumbh in Prayagraj is attracting global attention. Diverse personalities and incidents have gone viral on social media. Here are some highlights:
iit baby
Abhay Singh, a graduate of IIT Mumbai, became a prominent figure due to his educational background and subsequent embrace of spirituality. Baba Juna, popularly known as IIT, joined the Akhara, but his interviews and views, which often clashed with the Akhara’s viewpoint, led to his expulsion. His sermons continue to generate significant public discussion and debate.
Glamorous sadhvi
Influencer Harsha Richharia, dubbed the “glamorous Sadhvi”, sparked controversy this week after taking part in the traditional procession of saints on chariots at the Maha Kumbh festival.
The dispute increased so much that Harsha announced his departure from Mahakumbh with tears. In a video shared on her social media account (X), she explained that she is not yet a fully ordained Sadhvi and that people have misidentified her based on her appearance. While deeply devoted to spirituality, he emphasized that he is still on a journey of spiritual growth.
Monalisa
A video of a necklace seller, fondly called ‘Monalisa’, has gone viral. This video of a dark-skinned girl with brown eyes from Indore was captured by a YouTuber.
Since then, many people have been buying the necklace from her at “increased” prices and demanding to take pictures with it. People are reportedly paying exorbitant amounts ( 1,000) for 20 necklaces to create reels featuring him.
Rudraksh Babas
The saints adorned with garlands of 108 beads are a major attraction, with two figures attracting significant attention. One is said to wear 11,000 rosaries, weighing over 30 kg, while the other, Geetanand Maharaj, reportedly wears 1.25 lakh rosaries, weighing 45 kg. Many other Rudraksh Baba are also gaining popularity online.
Pigeon Papa
Rajpuri Maharaj, popularly known as Kabootarwale Baba, is from Juna Akhara. He has become an internet sensation because of the pigeon that constantly sits on his head. The bird, named Hari Puri, has been his integral companion for almost a decade, accompanying him during meals, sleep and meditation. He believes in kindness towards all beings and says, “All beings are equal, and it is our responsibility to take care of living beings. We should dedicate ourselves to serving all living beings with kindness.”
Thorn Baba
Topi Yogi Ramesh Lal Nishad is known as Kantewale Baba because of his practice of lying on a bed of thorny acacia bushes. Dressed only in saffron dhoti and with a cloth wrapped around his head, he plays the damru while the devotees look at him in surprise. He considers it a form of “penance” and claims to be untouched by it, attributing it to “divine will”. During this exercise he chants mantras intermittently.
Anajwala Baba
Known for cultivating wheat, millet and several other grains on his head for the last five years, Amarjeet from Sonbhadra has acquired the nickname of Anajwale Baba, also known as Environment Baba. This unique practice stems from his commitment towards environmental protection and world peace. He shared that the new set of crops will remain on his head for the next two and a half months, which coincides with his pledge for the continuous hoisting of the Indian flag and the peaceful conclusion of the Maha Kumbh. Devotees seeking his blessings are given grains of rice as a symbol of his goodwill.
