In fact, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has recently signed a free trade agreement with India, which is a historic achievement for both the countries. Christopher Luxon said that this agreement will not only strengthen economic cooperation, but will also create new possibilities for the future. According to Luxon, this agreement will create new employment opportunities in New Zealand, increase income and also increase exports.

However, New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters has also criticized this agreement. He said that it is neither free nor fair. He said it was not a fair deal for New Zealand because it did not provide adequate protection to some domestic sectors, especially dairy products. Peters said that this agreement is a bad deal for New Zealand. However, PM Luxon ignored this and not only approved this agreement but also described this FTA as a big economic step, which will make it easier for New Zealand to access India’s huge market of 140 crore consumers.

What is included in the India-New Zealand trade agreement?

Prime Minister Luxon has written on X that this historic agreement will bring more jobs, better income and new opportunities for exports. We are fixing fundamental problems and building the future. Let us remind you that negotiations on this FTA between India and New Zealand were completed in December 2025. It is considered to be one of the fastest concluded trade agreements in India. Official talks started in March this year, when Prime Minister Lakson visited India. This agreement reflects the growing economic relations between the two countries and the shared vision of long-term development.

How much will India benefit?

Under this India-New Zealand agreement, India will get the facility of zero duty on all its exports to New Zealand. This is expected to directly benefit many major sectors of India. Especially textile industry, medicines, engineering products and service sector may get new opportunities. The New Zealand market will become more accessible for Indian companies than before.

• Under this agreement, New Zealand has promised to invest 20 billion US dollars (USD 20 billion) in India in the next 15 years. This investment is similar to the model of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).
• This investment will be made mainly in sectors like manufacturing, infrastructure, services, innovation and employment generation. This is expected to strengthen the investment climate in India, while providing long-term opportunities for New Zealand companies in one of the world’s fastest growing economies.
• Experts believe that this FTA will not be limited to trade only, but will also give new heights to strategic and economic partnership. While India will get an opportunity to increase its exports and investments, New Zealand will get an opportunity to establish a strong foothold in a large and emerging market for its products and companies.
• India will also give important concessions to New Zealand. India will give duty exemption on 70 percent of the tariff lines, which will benefit about 95 percent of New Zealand’s exports. This will especially provide better access to New Zealand’s agricultural products, food processing, dairy and meat and other sectors in the Indian market.
