Receiving funds of Rs 100 crore under PM-USHA, Lucknow University will advance to a research and multidisciplinary education and infrastructure.
Lucknow University (LU) will be upgraded to a research and multidisciplinary education university after receiving a grant of Rs 100 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA).
LU Vice-Chancellor Alok Kumar Rai said the university has decided to use 50 per cent of the funds to strengthen its research ecosystem, while the remaining 50 per cent will be used to ensure availability of all necessary infrastructure on the campus for students. He said, “Our main focus is to develop a centralized research facility on the campus which will be broadly divided into three segments: life sciences research, physical sciences research and technological research.”
He further said that as part of strengthening its research, “We are also planning to develop a cluster-computing facility where all the information and technology related work can be done, thereby enhancing the capabilities of our library in bioinformatics, statistics, E-software can be available for economics and others. Concerned departments can do research. With the help of this fund, we aim to create a 100 percent Wi-Fi campus.
The Vice Chancellor said, “The second aspect of focus will be to make the university a multidisciplinary education imparting institution, for which we will strengthen our infrastructure primarily by improving our undergraduate and postgraduate classes in the Arts Quadrangle/Canning College. Revival of the historic Lal Baradari located in the heart of the campus, a more than 100 year old building and our teachers residence which is currently in a very poor condition.
“Also, a five-storey lecture theater building is proposed in the Atal Block of the university. This five-storey building is proposed on 30,000 square feet of land. There is a dire need for lecture theater buildings on the campus which will enable the university to conduct large national level examinations, conferences, conventions, academic programs and others,” Rai said.
He said that the lecture theater building will have 25 conference rooms with a seating capacity of 100 people. Also, our sports infrastructure will be further boosted by creating new tracks and courts for athletes and sportspersons.
It may be recalled that Lucknow University was selected along with 25 other universities for a grant of Rs 100 crore under the PM-USHA scheme. In testing the criteria for the grant, LU got the highest score of 585 out of 650. Overall, universities of UP received the maximum grant of Rs 740 crore.
