West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday met Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Khagen Murmu at a private hospital in Siliguri, where he is undergoing treatment after a serious attack by a mob.
The attack took place on Monday in Nagarkata in the Dooars region of north Bengal, when the MPs were surveying areas affected by floods and landslides.
Television footage showed the Chief Minister entering the hospital where the Maldaha North MP is currently admitted. According to Trinamool Congress (TMC) sources, Banerjee spoke to doctors and personally assured the opposition leader that he would get all necessary assistance from the state government, the news agency reported. details of the attack
Murmu was allegedly attacked by a group of locals when he was in the Dooars area of Jalpaiguri to monitor relief and rescue operations on Monday, October 6. He suffered serious head injuries during the incident.
BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh also alleged that he was attacked by the mob when he was distributing relief material in the disaster-hit area.
political controversy
The attack immediately created a major political controversy in the state. The BJP immediately accused the ruling TMC of instigating attacks on its elected representatives.
In contrast, the TMC hit back, alleging that the opposition was merely indulging in “photo opportunities” in disaster-stricken areas rather than making a genuine contribution to the relief efforts. Thus this incident has further increased the tension between the two major political parties in West Bengal.
The political controversy escalated when West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya made a highly inflammatory claim regarding the identity of the attackers.
Speaking on Tuesday, Mr Bhattacharya alleged that two party leaders—MP Khagen Murmu and MLA Shankar Ghosh—were attacked by “illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and Rohingyas” in Jalpaiguri district on Monday. He further claimed that the attack was carried out by “jihadi” elements, which he alleged was instigated by the ruling TMC.
In response to these allegations, Mr Bhattacharya demanded that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) investigate the incident.
He stressed that the central government is taking the matter seriously and said both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are “keeping an eye on the situation” and will not allow such elements to “spread aggression” in the state.
Bhattacharya claimed: “This attack was carried out by illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and Rohingyas. ‘Jihadi’ elements protected by the ruling TMC carried out an unprovoked attack on two of our senior leaders who had gone to Nagarakata to meet flood and landslide affected people and distribute relief material.”
