Both Houses of Parliament – Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha – were adjourned on Friday after opposition leaders created a ruckus demanding a discussion on alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examinations and the ‘failure’ of the National Testing Agency (NTA) which conducts the exam.
MPs from opposition parties, including the Congress, moved adjournment motions demanding a discussion on the issues in both Houses, but the demands were rejected. The decision to move these motions was taken at a meeting of India Block floor leaders held at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence in the national capital on June 27.
Congress MPs Ranjit Ranjan and Gaurav Gogoi moved the adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha, while party MP Syed Naseer Hussain introduced the motion in the Rajya Sabha.

The Lok Sabha session began with Speaker Om Birla reading out tributes to members of the House who passed away recently. After the tributes, the Speaker insisted that the motion of thanks on the President’s address be discussed first.
Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said, “We wanted to send a message to the affected youth of the country from the Parliament that the government and the opposition care about you. That is why we had demanded a discussion before the discussion on the motion of thanks on the President’s address.”
The proceedings of the House resumed after the first adjournment till 12 noon. The opposition MPs continued their protest, following which Speaker Om Birla adjourned the House till Monday.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said in the Lok Sabha, “Never before in the history of Parliament has any other subject been discussed during the motion of thanks on the President’s address. I assure that the government will answer all questions only after the motion of thanks on the President’s address.”
Similar scenes were witnessed in Rajya Sabha when Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar adjourned the House amid uproar by India Block MPs demanding a discussion on NEET. Rajya Sabha proceedings continued in the afternoon.
The NEET-UG exam held on May 5 for admission to medical colleges has been mired in controversy due to allegations of question paper leak and irregularities. The exam results were declared on June 4. On June 27, the CBI made its first arrest in the NEET-UG paper leak case, detaining two people in Patna, Bihar.
