Limit calories to live longer; Study shows how it works

To lose weight, people often adopt different types of diet and lifestyle changes. However, how the body adapts to diet helps influence a person’s longevity in a positive way. A recent study led by Gary Churchill, The Jackson Laboratory, showed how different dietary choices can have different effects on longevity. Research has confirmed that calorie restriction and intermittent fasting can have significant life-extending benefits.

The research was conducted on 937 genetically diverse female mice – the mice were divided into five categories – one with unrestricted access to food, two with calorie restriction and two with intermittent fasting. The mice then had regular health assessments and blood tests throughout their lives to observe the effects of their diet.

The study found that calorie restriction and intermittent fasting improved the lifespan of mice compared to mice that had unrestricted access to food. It was further observed that rats who fasted one or two days per week had an increased lifespan – rats who fasted two days lived longer than rats who fasted one day. Even when they ate the same amount of food as their unrestricted counterparts, calorie restriction and intermittent fasting increased their lifespan.

Gary Churchill, the Carl Gunnar Johansson Chair and JAX professor who led the study, said in a statement that moderate levels of calorie restriction and intermittent fasting may help improve health and lifespan. .

The study challenges an old belief – calorie restriction can reduce the negative effects of obesity, significantly improving lifespan. However, the study further suggested that a more complex model of the mechanism exists that helps improve longevity with calorie restriction.

Disadvantages of dietary restrictions:

Excessive dietary restrictions also have negative aspects. The study reported that the mice that lived the longest on average showed a significant reduction in lean body mass. Decreased immunity was also observed, making them more vulnerable to infection.
